Bias Cut Laminate Workpiece

A cousin of mine was wondering how such a pepper mill was created.  He’s done segmented turning before, but for reasons unknown to the universe, he was just drawing a blank on how to get started setting up this kind of turning blank.

With pictures being worth a thousand words, I fired up the CAD software and modeled a quick explanation.  Here are the results:

Glue up your pieces – To start, glue up a laminate with the woods of your choice that will yield a blank big enough for the project that you are doing.  Since the blank will be cut at angle during the project, plan the initial size of the laminate to bigger than the final cut size. Cut at your favorite angle – This is why you will glue up your laminate larger than expected.  Select an angle that looks suitable to you, cut the bias and square the ends accordingly. Turn to your favorite shape – Put the piece on the lathe and get started having fun!
